Our post today is all about the 5 Key Social Skills We All Need To Know to be higher performing human beings when in the company of other people.
Whether you’re trying to make new friends, impress your boss or attract the love of your life, social skills can be invaluable tools in your arsenal of interpersonal weapons.
Unfortunately for us, we don’t learn them in school, and many people don’t learn them at home either. However, if you want to be more successful and confident in your everyday life, certain social skills are crucial to know and employ.
Patience
Social skills come in all shapes and sizes. But patience is a social skill that many of us don’t master as well as we should. Often, we are too impulsive or so into ourselves that we don’t stop to think about others, about their opinions, or how they might be feeling.
Instead of rushing through the day, it’s better for us to slow down and enjoy the little things, while trying not to sweat the small stuff.
For example, imagine what you would do if you were speaking with someone who didn’t know much English, and was having trouble understanding you. You would probably slow down your speech and by doing so you would speak more clearly, and with an even tone.
A lack of patience is seen as self-centeredness at best and selfishness at worst. It can also lead to anger when someone doesn’t listen or understand what you’re saying, try listening before reacting. If you still feel angry, express yourself by calmly stating your feelings.
If people get defensive and say something you disagree with, back away from the conversation and look for another time to address it. People usually have very strong feelings about themselves, making them sensitive when faced with criticism or disagreement. So remember always try to use empathy!
5 Key Social Skills We All Need
Listening Skills
If you’re the speaker: make eye contact with the listener and be attentive to them. It’s okay to listen without interrupting, but if they pause and look away or nod their head to sign that they’re interested in hearing more, it’s polite to say before continuing.
If you’re the listener: make sure not to interrupt the speaker unless necessary. And wait for them to finish speaking and then ask questions or provide feedback.
Regardless of who is speaking, give verbal and non-verbal signs of understanding such as nodding your head or providing verbal acknowledgments like uh-huh or I see what you mean.
Communication Skills
Listen
One of the most important skills is to be a good listener. This will help you pick up on conversational cues, enabling you to create new conversations and deepen your relationships with people. It’s also just an essential life skill. How will you hear the other person’s words if you’re not listening?
Talk
To have good communication skills, you must talk too. For example, if someone asks you a question and you don’t answer immediately, they might assume that they asked something inappropriate or stupid.
So when someone asks you a question or talks to you about something they care about, it’s best to respond appropriately, even if it isn’t something that interests you.
Accept Compliments
A great way to build rapport with people is by accepting their compliments. Compliments show others that we really value them as people. And we want them in our lives for more than just what we can get from them. So do take some time today to stop saying thank-you, or I’m glad for every compliment and instead say Thank-you for noticing.
Social Graces
Know when it’s time to leave and what constitutes a good conversation. You don’t have to agree with someone on everything. But you must decide on the basics of life, such as living creatures created by God and should not be harmed or killed unnecessarily.
It is important for everyone, especially children, to learn these basic truths about society. Just so that they can make wise decisions as they get older.
Personal Space Awareness
When we are in a crowded place, and someone is getting too close, we can politely say excuse me or move away.
This demonstrates good personal space awareness. In the same way, if you are engaging with someone who does not seem to be paying attention to you and starts to drift off into their world, it’s time for you to move on.
Final Thoughts
