Persistence is a key necessity of life. Everyone experiences hard times during their life – it is a fact. However, how do people continually work through those hard times so they can continue living productive, happy, and positive lives?
Understanding how persistence works and how to embrace it is a major component of working through those hard times successfully. Fortunately, even if you are not a particularly persistent person, you can learn how to develop this trait and become more productive.
What Does A Persistent Person Look Like?
Persistent people have a few key characteristics.
- They are resilient.
Persistent people do their best not to let a setback knock them off course. Rather than feeling defeated, a persistent person will regroup and “bounce back” quickly after they experience a setback.
They do not stay down and out for long – instead, they embrace resilience so they can get back to their lives quicker.
- They are creative.
Persistence often means a person is willing to think “outside of the box” and try some unorthodox methods for solving a problem. Rather than giving up when one of their ideas does not work as planned, they will begin brainstorming new ways they can approach solving the problem instead.
- They are forward-thinking.
Persistent people always think in a way that involves moving forward. They do not like to get caught up in the past or any anxious “what-if” thinking. Instead, they focus their thoughts on the future and try to find ways they can keep moving forward.
- They learn from their mistakes.
A persistent person understands that making mistakes is a totally normal and human thing to do. Perfect people do not exist; this is where persistence is extremely handy. A persistent person views their mistakes as great learning opportunities.
After the mistake, they take the knowledge they gained from the experience and move forward with it, using it to inform their decision making in the future.
Rather than allowing the mistake to stop them from trying again or make them feel ashamed, they pull the positivity from it so they can keep going.
Persistence.. What Does It Mean?
If you struggle to embrace persistence in your life, what can you do to enhance this quality within yourself?
Being persistent does not come naturally to all people, but it is possible to learn how to be more persistent. Consider the following strategies to encourage more persistence within yourself:
- Brainstorm plans A, B, and C ahead of time.
Any time you seek to set out on a new pathway, go ahead and think of some alternate ways you can tackle any challenges you may face. Knowing that you have some backup plans ready in case your original idea does not work can make persistence easier to grasp.
- Actually take note of what the “worst case scenario” really is.
Anxiety will make you believe the absolute craziest and wildest worst case scenarios in any given situation.
However, when you analyze those possibilities through the lens of reality, you will likely discover that running into those kinds of issues is not actually that likely. It is easier to be persistent when you are keeping your thoughts centered in reality.
- Embrace the normalcy of making mistakes.
Often, the fear of making a mistake can stop a person from trying something differently. Allow yourself to embrace the idea that making mistakes is a totally normal part of the learning process.
It is okay to make a mistake, and the sooner you are able to accept that mistakes are normal and natural, the sooner you can persist onward.
